Travelling with my pet from Philippines to Colombia (South America)

Flying with my dog from Philippines to Colombia (South America)

Are you sure that your pet will be safe and sound during the flight? Can my dog support the noise of the engine? How about the temperature of the compartment? These are some questions I had in my mind whether to leave my furbaby in the Philippines or take her with me to Colombia. My pet’s name is Legend (a chocolate Labrador), a present I received from my Colombian fiancée.

Way back in Philippines, I was always alone in the house and she is my only companion. I eat with her, shower with her, walk with her and even sleep with her on my bed. The day comes that Leo (My Colombian Fiancée) asked me to go with in Colombia and start a new life. How about Legend?? I started to read articles 4 months prior my flight (March 15, 2015) on how to take a pet internationally. I was so anxious that “most” of the articles I found online were stories of a pet who wasn’t able to survive a flight. I got so scared and thinking not to bring her with me.  But the experience I am going to share is about the successful journey of my canine from Philippines to Colombia.
Things to be done:

1.       Check the requirements needed from your country of destination. For Colombia:
*Health Certificate from Licensed Veterinarian (valid for 15 days before flight)
*Updated records of Deworming and Vaccination
*Export Permit (Valid for 10 days before flight)
*Fee of 39,000 Colombian pesos (roughly 20 USD) when you claim the pet from ICA (Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario) located inside the El Dorado Airport

2.       Check the pet policy of your Preferred Airlines. Some Airline will reject your pet request due to extreme weather conditions. There is also a restriction about the animal breed. Airlines will not allow a pug nosed and snub nosed cats and dogs as checked baggage.

3.       Find an airline that will be best for you. I asked Lufthansa about the bringing my pet. The attendant told me that I need to ask for another airline to take me out to Philippines going to Asia (connecting flight). Once I am somewhere in Asia, that’s the time they will be responsible for my itinerary. It sounds like a lot of job from me so I called another airline (Delta Airlines). Jenna, the girl from Delta offered me the cheapest dates when to fly in Colombia. I purchased my ticket for March 15, 2015 four months prior my flight and it was 61,000 pesos one-way. I told her I’ll be bringing my dog with me. She asked me details about my pet like the weight, measurements as well as her kennel dimensions for the pet request. Dog as big as Labrador will be charged as excess luggage (200 USD) and will be placed among fragile items in the compartment close to the tail of the plane. No need for reservation for the pet. Just check in the pet like a regular luggage.

4.       Provide a crate that will allow your pet to move around, sit and lie down in natural position. It must be leak-proof and well ventilated on at least two sides.

(during her check in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport)

Crate Training for Travel:
·         Introduce your pet in the crate. Never force him to go inside.
·         Leave the crate door open and place the food/treats. Once your pet is inside the kennel, close the door. As soon as he finished eating you will open the door again. This will help your pet get used eating inside the crate.
·         When the pet is familiar with the kennel. Increase the amount of time that the door stays closed. If your dog starts to cry release him and put him back again. Be patient.
·         Download classical music (Pachelbel/Mozart/Chopin) on your phone/tablet and place it inside the crate. This will calm your pet and will put her to sleep. (This is effective to my pet)
·         Exercise the pet before leaving her inside the crate.

5.       Ten days before your flight, secure the requirements needed.
*Health certificate from licensed veterinarian, the updated records of your pet’s vaccination and deworming. Once you have all of these, go directly to Bureau of Animal Industry (at Visayaz Avenue Diliman Quezon City) for the Export Permit (valid for 10 days). This is free and duration process is around 20 minutes.

After these steps, it’s time to relax. The date of my flight was fast approaching. I was getting more and more anxious. I know for myself that Legend is a strong dog and she will survive the flight. The night before our flight to Colombia. I prepare her kennel with her stuff. The red bag contains her food, plastic bag for her waste, wee wee pad for kennel, leash and the wheels of her kennel. Provide an adequate water supply to keep your pet hydrated and lastly, place a used clothing (t-shirt) to ease the anxiety and stress of your dog.

(During our check in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport)

It will be a long Journey us. Our itinerary was Manila-Japan-New York- Colombia. On Japan, my name was mentioned before disembarking the plane. I got nervous. close to the door of the plane, a girl was holding a paper with my name on it so I approached the Japanese attendant.

She told me my dog was doing great and asked for an extra copy of export permit. I got teary eyed knowing she was safe and sound. It was 4 hour-flight from Manila to Japan. For now, I won’t see her until we get to New York. The duration of time from Japan to New York is roughly 11-12 hours. When we got to New York. It was a great sigh of relief seeing Legend. I was surprised her kennel was clean and no vomit. She was barking at me to release her from the crate immediately which I did. I walked her outside the JFK Airport for an hour even it was freezing cold.

                                (outside JFK Airport New York)

I cannot tolerate the coldness and hence spent the next hours inside the airport with Legend. We were just sitting close to the counter of Delta until I surrender her to the baggage Area. I was with Legend for four hours, just cuddling and playing with her.

After 9 hours of waiting, finally I stepped on the plane going to Bogota. It was another 6-hour flight. I was relax at this moment knowing Legend was in good condition.

( Arrival in El Dorado Aeropuerto Bogota Colombia together with my furbaby )

After the immigration in El Dorado Airport Colombia, I went straight ahead to the luggage area. I heard a bark and I know it is my furbaby, I was so happy, knowing we we're both fine after the long flight.

How did we spend our 30 hours in Bataan?

How to get to Bataan

From Five Star Cubao Manila, take a bus going to Balanga and pay 200 pesos per person.
Travel time: 3- 4 hours

Our itinerary for Bataan includes St Joseph Cathedral, Plaza Mayor de Balanga, Dambana ng Kagitingan, Bagac Bay Beach Resort, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and the famous Geno's Taro Ice cream in Balanga . We left the Five Star Bus Station around 9 am and arrived at half past twelve.

January 29, 2015 (12:30 pm)- Arrival at Balanga Bataan

How to get to St Joseph Cathedral and Plaza Mayor de Balanga

The time we set foot in Bataan, we took a tricycle to head us to St Joseph Cathedral and Plaza Mayor de Balanga. Expect to pay 10 pesos per head.

St. Joseph Cathedral

Plaza Mayor de Balanga

Stop and take a picture with the Capital's great Architectural designs.

Where to eat

located at Banzon St, Balanga

it's worth the price, delicious food and big servings!

How get to Dambana ng Kagitingan

From Balanga Bataan Terminal, take a jeep going to Cabog Cabog and tell the driver to drop you off at Mt Samat. Fee is P 19.00 per person.Travel time is 10 minutes. From Mt Samat, asked the tricycle driver to bring you to the Dambana ng Kagitingan. Do not underestimate the power of the 3 wheel vehicle. These tricycles at Mt Samat defies gravity. Expect to pay P 100 per head (one way). Travel time is 15 minutes. It is kind of expensive, but they are not being opportunistic. The road to Dambana ng Kagitingan is a quite steep but well paved. If you prefer to walk, it will take 2-3 hours before you can reach the summit of Mt Samat.

                                             Dambana ng Kagitingan

We arrived at the Shrine at 3:30 pm and paid for the entrance (P 20.00 each). The guy who works in shrine told us to maximize the time remaining because the place will be closed at 5:00 pm.

   the Cross

inside the cross

You could gain access inside the cross by means of elevator or stairs. Little we know, it was almost 5:00 pm and the museum is closed. Our tricycle driver was waiting  for us outside to take us back to the highway. We were waiting for a jeep until a tricycle driver offered us to take us back to Balanga Terminal. He offered us     P 80.00 for 3 persons. Not bad, instead of waiting around for a jeep that cost P 19.00 per head, we accepted the driver's offer. That time, we had experienced traffic in the road to the Balanga Terminal. The driver drop us off at the market. We took another tricycle again to the terminal of Balanga and paid for P 10.00 per head. Our next destination is Bagac Bay Beach Resort in Bagac. We settled on this lodge because it is closed to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.

How to get to Bagac Bay Beach Resort from Balanga Terminal

From Balanga Terminal,  take a jeep going to Bagac, expect to pay P 47.00.
Travel time: 45 mins to 1 hour
From Brgy Pag - Asa (the last stop of the jeep) take a tricycle going to Bagac Bay Beach Resort. P 10.00 per head

We arrived at the resort around 7:30 pm. A piece of advice, before taking a tricycle to Bagac Bay Beach Resort look a place somewhere to eat. The stores close to Bagac Bay beach Resort are just sari sari stores (convenient stores). We asked a tricycle driver to take us to the town of Bagac for a carinderia.

comfy Pipit

PIPIT room (airconditioned) : P 1,500 for 2pax for extra mattress (P 300)

This resort doesn't have WIFI and in our room we don't have a television. The clients that night were just the three of us. It was so quiet and dark on the otherside of our room. Our friend Darcy was humming a horror sound, trying to scare the shit out of us. Haha! What we did before sleeping was talking, talking and talking

The next morning before heading to the beach, we bought a sapsap (dried fish)   P 10.00 as a pasalubong. There are vendors that will approached you to buy their stuffs. Their sapsap is the best. I cooked it. They are crunchy and not salty.
We headed to the beach and walked a bit to the right ride of the resort. This where the magic happens

at the back: Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

trying this shot haha! did we nail it?

We left the lodge at exactly 12:00 noon.

Our next destination is Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. The entrance is P 685.00 per head. Expensive right? but the tricycle driver told us we can get a discount. He introduced us to Priscilla Pangan. The owner of sari sari store in front of Bagac Bay Beach Resort. She listed us, as her guests. Instead of paying P 685.00 per head we only paid P 500.00 per head. In return, we gave her P 100.00 tip.

How to get to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

From Bagac Bay Beach Resort, ask a tricycle driver to take you to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar. Expect to pay P 20.00 per head.

Priscilla Pangan told us that the tour will start at 1:00 pm. In addition to the tour, she said that we can access the pool inside the Las Casas. We were hungry that time and the meals inside the Las Casas are expensive. We decided to take our lunch in a carinderia just before the gates of Las Casas Filipinas.

masarap and abot kayang lunch!

History of  Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

"José "Gerry" Acuzar, owner of New San Jose Builders started to rebuild Spanish mansions in Bagac in 2003.[2] Each house was dismantled brick by brick, numbered, transported to his property in Bagac, reassembled in the same order, and then restored. Houses were chosen based on their historical, cultural and architectural value. Acuzar bought houses which were in a state of neglect, from the owners, and in some cases also purchased the lot where the mansions stood. "

we wanted to dip in the pool, but the thought of dressing up again made us say "NO"

More houses to be re-constructed, sooon

A few reminders:

* Bring a bottle of water with you
* Wear comfortable clothes
* Before getting in some of the houses, you are required to remove your shoes or slippers. It is much better to wear slippers during the tour

We left the Las Casas Filipinas at 4:00 pm to catch a bus at 6:00 pm going back to Manila . If you could stay at night it would be wonderful. They said that the place is splendid at night.

The last in our itinerary is to taste The Taro Ice Cream of Geno's Ice Cream. The origin of Geno's Ice Cream is at Orani Bataan. We were glad they opened a branch in Balanga Bataan.

How to Go Back from Las Casas Filipinas to Geno's Ice Cream at Balanga:

Ask a tricycle driver to take you to the Jeep Terminal going to Balanga. Expect to pay P 15.00 per head. In the jeepney station ,we waited atleast 20 minutes since they were scheduled to depart at 4:30 pm. Expect to pay P 35.00 each. Once you are at the Balanga Terminal, take a tricycle going to the market and tell them to go to Geno's Ice Cream. Fee is P 10.00 each.

1 gallon of Taro Ice Cream

Geno's Ice Cream store is located at the Market. It has a green gate and offers services for birthday parties. We thought we could try some of their flavors in a cup, as what other blogger had said. The guy working in the store told us they sell their ice cream per gallon not in small cups. A lot of sacrifices has been made to try this ice cream. We ended purchasing the 1 gallon and decided to eat it in the bus going back to Manila. The price of 1 gallon Taro ice cream is P 460.00. The store will hand it to you covered in a styro with salt and ice to preserved the Ice Cream. The span of the ice cream inside the styro will last up to 8 hours.

Before we take the Bus going to Manila, we ordered a meal for our dinner in a fast-food to keep our stomach full during the travel. The Manila Bus left Balanga at 6:30 pm.

January 30, 2015 (6:30 pm)- Departure at Balanga Bataan

and that's how we spent our 30 hours in BATAAN!!!

A BIT ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

Hola wonderful readers! My name is Viola from Cavite, Philippines. I am a devoted mother to my chocolate Labrador Retiever. A lady who has a relish for cooking. A slave to desserts. Consuming a lot of sweets is not good for the body so I am making it sure that I drink a lot of water to clean my system. I know it's not enough by drowning myself of water. One way to free yourself from the guilt of too much sugar is to burn them. My physical activities depends on my mood. I do HIIT (high intensity interval training) If I wanna be dead tired. For less strenuous exercise yet drains the sweat you desire, Pilates is what I recommend. For a great stretch and a silent mind, I speak favorably of Yoga. When I feel bubbly, I do belly dancing. My favorite belly dancer is Sadie (check her videos on youtube). Like everyone else, I have an Itchy Feet (you mean an athlete's foot?). No, itchy feet like wanting to move from one place to another. I love beaches, mountains and bushes.

I am a licensed nurse but never practice it. I've had 3 different jobs in the past five years. I worked as a customer service representative, a hotel stewardess in an international cruise line and a real estate agent. What I really enjoy was being a real estate agent. On my last contract, I wasn't able to produce golden eggs for the team. I like it so much but need to (let it go, let it go, can't hold it back anymore). With the experience I gained for the past 5 years, it helped me to narrow the path to find my calling. I ll be where I belong, soon.

“If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.” --  Steve Jobs

Thanks for dropping by! I ll be posting more to my blog so stay tune! mwah!

A Night of Growls and Riffs: Arch Enemy Live in World Trade Center Manila October 20, 2009

It's been almost six years since I set eyes on Arch Enemy's Concert that was held in World Trade Center, Manila on October 20, 2009 (Tuesday). Prices of tickets are P 2,000 (VIP, meet and greet), P 1,500 (VIP) and P 600 (general admission). My friends and I purchased the VIP:Meet and Greet.

                                                              Arch Enemy Live in Manila

clusters of "bakal"

Before the highlight, the show featured local acts (Mortal Fear, Bloodshedd, Badburn, and Intolerant).

Bloodshedd

Later on, the crowd cheered as Arch Enemy made their entrance on stage. I still have the lucid memory of the enthusiastic crowd. It was crazy. It was just another night in the roaring moshpit.

Unfortunately, I cannot find their setlist that night on the internet. In spite of that I assure you that they played most of their compelling tracks. After the show, we proceeded to the backstage for the meet and greet. While waiting for the band members of Arch Enemy the crew gave us 2 slices pizza for each and a can of soda. After an almost hour of waiting, only Daniel Erlandsson (drummer) and Sharlee D' Angelo (bassist) attended the meet and greet. A large number of people got disappointed, but we were still thankful two of the members were present for the Meet and Greet.

feeling close? haha

a hug to remember

These two members (Daniel and Sharlee) who were present during the meet and greet were awesome. We know you guys were tired but still you managed to join us at the backstage. Kudos! That night was a blast!

Dogs Get Jealous , too

This is our 9 month old choco Labrador Retriever. One night I petted a stuffed toy dog, kissed it and hugged it.

                                                                       hey! Jealousy

These actions resulted to jealousy of Legend. She started to show signs of aggression, barking, chasing me,wanting to get between us and wants my attention. According to study their jealousy is not of an adult that tortures the emotion but instead this kind of jealousy is commonly seen to infants when the mother shows affection to other baby.

Adventure Awaits in Panguil Eco Park Laguna

I've been wondering for many months about where to get a place which is pet friendly, close to Cavite and with reasonable price. Thanks to tita Del who suggested the place Panguil River Eco - Tourism Park in Natividad Pangil Laguna. It is approximately 2 hours away from Bacoor Cavite. Who would have thought that there is a splendid scenery within the reach. What I am about to write was the first and second visit in Panguil Eco Park.

FIRST VISIT

The first visit was September 28,2014 and to celebrate the 6th month of our kid (well our kid has paws, tail and fur). Her name is Legend. She is a chocolate labrador.

                                                                                                the Gang

                                                             very affordable,huh?

can't believe we have these for an economical price

nipa huts along the Panguil river

After a short rest in our cottage, tour guide (Ryan) lead us to Ambon Ambon Falls. The journey to get to the falls is trekking (more or less 30 minutes)  and with the aid of bamboo rafts.

and to pay homage to Ryan (our tour guide) I will post this one and only photo we have. haha! He is so nice and definitely we will ask for him for our future visits in Panguil Eco Park

At the midst of our bushwalking back to the cottage, Ryan suggested that we can take the river tubing. These big black round rubbers will bring us to the nipa huts.

Two thumbs up for Panguil Eco Park, we will visit again. Soon!!!

SECOND VISIT

The second visit was December 21,2014. This time we invited more people to join us in Panguil Eco Park.  We asked Ryan to be our tour guide for our second visit.

                                                                                  the more the merrier

Due to the recent typhoons that hit the region, 2 out of 3 bamboo rafts were damaged. The situation obliged us to cross the river using just a rope.

the one and only bamboo raft that stood still against the previous typhoons

Ryan, helping us to cross the river

the Gang

Unfortunately, 3 of us were left behind in the 4th station. My aunt, her son and Chloe (the shih tzu) decided not to go the falls. My dog (Legend) is heavy to carry to the ladder so I made my choice not to push through and wait for the others to return.

Legend was getting worried as my brother fight against the strong current

the ladder to get to the falls

Above all, we enjoyed the second visit in Panguil. Who would not find it blissful to see your fur baby playing in the water?

and she loves the water so much

Till next time!
